Skill development: Pushing the opponent to the back of the court

Anticipating opponents “play” to the open court space

Game/Task:

Half-court singles without net

Conditions:

  • students are to use 4 cones and a skipping rope to create a “court”
  • students alternate serve
  • a point is scored after every rally

Diagram:

Organizational Points:

  • students are in groups of 2
  • one retrieves 2 racquets, a shuttle and locates a court, the other retrieves four cones and a skipping rope
  • cones, ropes, racquets and shuttles are put out prior to instruction and spaced apart
  • shuttles are contained
  • unused equipment is not left lying on the sidelines

Teaching Points:

Ø      keep the rally going

Ø      make your opponent move to score

Modifications / Refinements / Progressions:

  • students are able to change the dimensions of the playing area (always longer or shorter - never wider)
  • if it is too easy then make the playing area longer
  • too difficult - decrease the length of the playing area

Find the appropriate dimensions that will challenge the students and provide success at the same time.

  • students can play games to four and the first to four will make his/her court larger (see lesson one for more details)
